If there is one “joy stealer” that you should get rid of, it is paranoia. Well, paranoia, according to the dictionary is “a mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution, unwarranted jealousy, or exaggerated self-importance, typically elaborated into an organized system. It may be an aspect of chronic personality disorder, of drug abuse, or of a serious condition such as schizophrenia in which the person loses touch with reality.”

Yes, it is a mental condition. And basically, it all happens in the mind. Let us give emphasis on several aspects about paranoia so that we will be able to understand it very well. After reading this article, you will learn to distinguish this mental disorder from other disorders.

  • Fear of something bad from happening. If there is one thing that we fear the most that causes anxiety, it is the bad thing that may happen. As humans, we are capable of predicting. Yes. After a particular event, we tend to predict the outcome. And, oftentimes, when we have thoughts of “something bad” from happening, we cannot sleep. Our works are affected. Our studies are affected. And we begin to act abnormally.

Fear paralyzes us. Because we fear something, we do nothing sometimes. We are so afraid to move and make decisions because that may contribute to our suspicions. When being frozen with fear, we became less productive. Fear makes us runaway. If we fear something, say a ghost or a bearded man, we runaway. And because of our fear we get lost. Fear brings us away from our goals in life. Fear affects our health. Yes, even our eating habits are affected.

If we cannot control our fears, they will lead to paranoia.

  • Someone is planning something bad. I experienced being succumbed to this kind of thinking before. Well, I had lots of suspicions about a man I believed was planning to kill me. Yes, kill me. And I came to the point of extending my suspicion to other people as the ones who conspired with him.

Well, you know you are paranoid if you are full of suspicions about what other people are planning against you. You will have an uncomfortable feeling especially if you are dealing with them if something is bothering you. This is paranoia.

  • Exaggerated thoughts. Paranoids are prone to exaggerating thoughts. They will magnify an ant and say, “It’s a monster.” They are also prone to overthinking wherein they see problems that don’t exist. Overthinking leads to lack of happiness. This should stop. This is a form of paranoia.

If you are suffering from any of the above mentioned, you should do something about your condition. The thing is it is not healthy to be paranoid. And below are some ideas we recommend that you should do in order to break free from paranoia.

Be in control of your thoughts. What enters your mind have the capacity to affect your entirety. Yes, and when you are manipulated by negative thoughts, you will become paranoia’s prey. If you are prone to pessimistic thoughts, why not combat them with realistic thoughts.

There are people who normally expect bad results from something. Well, though this is so common to many, it is not a good idea. It is a form of pessimism. Why not look at the details, analyse them, and expect good outcomes. That will decrease your tendency to become paranoid, because your expectation for negative things to happen will just bring you anxiety and worries that lead to paranoia.

Be in control of your thoughts. Do not be lenient about it. Combat negative thoughts with positive one and you will feel better.

List down your worries. If you are worried about a lot of things, it is proper to list them down. The thing is you will constantly think about those things that steal your happiness and concentration daily. List them down so that you will have a clear understanding of your worries. You will see how huge or small the things that you are worrying about if you do this.

Once you have listed down all these worries, set a date wherein you are expecting them to happen and make a mark until you have tested everyone if they are real or not. Research shows that people are mostly paranoid about things that they have only conceived in their minds. Yes, we worry about things that do not exist.

Look at both sides of the issue. One of the best things to do when you are paranoid about something is to look at both sides of the issue. It is mentioned above that we worry about things that are not actually happening. And that is true. Unless you will not be able to clarify your doubts about something, you will not have peace of mind.

If that is the case, then it is high time to look at both sides of the issues. You have to check how possible or impossible a certain thing from happening. You can do this all alone or with the help of someone. List down all your observations about the issue and make an analysis. You will base your judgment on the data you have gathered plus your analysis. Do not jump into conclusion without further evidence. This will lessen your paranoia.

Share your problems with people you trust. If you came to the point wherein your paranoia is already affecting your life so badly, it is about time to seek for comfort. The thing is it is easier to carry a heavy burden when there is someone who is willing to help you. When you do this, make sure that you are sharing your problems with trusted people. These people will keep your problems confidential and will not disclose them to anyone. Be careful with people whom you will share your problems to. As much as possible, choose someone with sympathy and empathy.

Study and learn about your paranoia. Take time to read about your paranoia. If you do this, you will be able to find answers to your questions. It is still better to be knowledgeable of what is happening to you than make assumptions. Research about your condition, or, you might be willing to ask professionals about it.

Keep yourself busy. Well, if you are so busy with your life, you will not have enough time to be paranoid about something. Learn a new skill. Socialize with people. Help someone. Join a club. Well, there are so many things that you can do in order to avoid being idle all throughout the day.

Breaking free from paranoia isn’t easy. But it is possible if you will just consider the things that we have listed above.
