Best Ways To Deal With Diarrhea

Diarrhea is experienced by a normal American once or twice a year. It is characterized by frequent, watery bowel movements with painful cramps, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Though diarrhea is common and not a huge problem to adults, it should be dealt because of the discomfort that it will bring to you. Chronic diarrhea sends someone an alarm that a danger is coming. It affects all ages – young and adult.

Diarrhea causes you to go sit several times in the toilet to discharge, and many times you will only release watery bowel movement. While it only lasts for a few days, the unpleasant feeling that it will give to the one who has diarrhea is a sign that this should not be taken for granted.

The main cause of diarrhea is viral infection and it is not curable by antibiotics. It can also be acquired through food poisoning. For diarrhea that lasts for weeks or a month, study shows that it may be due to microbes like amoebae and giardia that resides in someone’s bowel.

Diarrhea affects you a lot. If you are a student, you need to absent from class because you cannot concentrate listening to your teacher and answering your tests. What you will think most of the times is the condition of your stomach and the nearest comfort room in school. If you are at work, it is really unpleasant to have diarrhea. So the best thing that you can do is go home and deal with your condition, but how? Here are some of the best ways to deal with diarrhea.

Just befriend diarrhea. I am not saying that you will enjoy having a diarrhea since it is not enjoyable. The idea is if you have no serious medical condition, just befriend with diarrhea. It is mentioned above that an average of once or twice a year an American suffers from diarrhea. And since diarrhea only stays for a few days, just ride with it. Some claim that diarrhea has cleansing effect on the body though this is not yet proven. Just go to the toilet if you feel like releasing from time to time. Do not stress yourself on this matter.

Drink plenty of water. What you are going to maintain here is your fluid and electrolyte balance that is why you need to drink water. In my case, if I have a diarrhea, I go for Gatorade (though I am not promoting the brand). The reason why I drink such is because there is more electrolyte that I can get from it than from a simple water. Do not deprive yourself of water if you have diarrhea because by merely looking at what you have released, they are mostly watery. And because of this you cannot afford to become dehydrated.

Do not drink ice-cold drinks. Keep water or any drinks cool before drinking. Once you have brought out from your fridge an ice-cold drink, just leave it there at the table for a few minutes and drink after. An explanation to this is cool drinks are less irritating and light in the stomach. Remember that your digestive system is in a bad condition so you do not need to let it function forcefully.

Have a lukewarm soup. Sip a lukewarm soup if there is any. It is advisable that the soup that you are going to sip is chicken broth. You can buy that at the market. Best if you will add salt in it.

Take a rest. A bed rest is very important. Just cancel those appointments if they are not that important. If you are thinking about some projects, assignments, works, and the like to do, just instruct someone to do that for you. Take a rest and allow your body to fight the problem in your digestive system. You can still do some social media thing if you want to. You can also watch television, listen to music, or read books so that you will not get bored. Just take a rest and leave all your worries behind.

Place a heating pad on your belly. For those who are suffering from abdominal cramps due to diarrhea, you can place a heating pad on your belly. This is a great tip from several health experts.

Take in some live lactobacillus cultures. In short eat yogurt and other related products. These are good bugs that stay in the gut. Though there are studies that it is not helpful to anyone who has diarrhea, others say, “there’s no harm in trying.” Try yogurt and see the results. And Oh! Do not eat heavymeal. As much as possible, refrain from eating heavy meals, instead, eat foods that are easy to digest. Go easy with your digestive system; it is still repairing the damage that has been caused by viral infection. This requires a lot of discipline especially when you are a person who eats a lot. There are instances when you will crave for food due to your hunger. But bear in mind that you have something to protect. With this, you can only eat rice, noodles, bananas, potatos, soda crackers, and the like. You have to be very careful with what you are eating. You are still in the process of healing.

Be careful with over-the-counter medicines. You might hear a lot of recommendations and suggestions from anyone about the kind of over-the-counter medicine that you need to take and you have to be very careful with this. Just in case there is really a need for an over-the-counter medicine, Pepto-Bismol is recommended. You can also try Imodium  A-D that slows down motility of the gut and Kaopectate for fluid absorption.

Avoid milk and other dairy products. Consumption of milk and other dairy products should be stopped when you have diarrhea. Aside from that, health experts also suggest that these foods should also be avoided one to three weeks after diarrhea. An explanation to this is milk is digested in the small intestine. And by that time, the small intestine is not yet ready to do heavy functions. Health experts, in addition, believe that milk can worsen diarrhea.

Don’t drink coffee. This is a bad news for all coffee lovers. Caffeine, according to a study, jump-starts your intestines. And if that happens, your intestines will have no choice but to function against its will. You have to be very careful with your digestive system while the repairing is being done. You can drink coffee probably after a month.

Avoid sugar. Yes, and this is one of the best ways to deal with diarrhea. Sugar increases diarrhea. So if you are still not disciplined on this one, you may prolong your suffering. If you are eating fruits while you have diarrhea, you have to make sure that they do not contain much sugar. Well, if possible do not eat candies and fruits. You only have a few choices of foods but they are essential to your healing. Just be patient.

Diarrhea can be dealt with if you will only consider the things that are listed above. If you condition became serious and you suspect that it is more than just diarrhea, it’s high time to consult a physician so that you will be taken care of. Do not take for granted this condition. Imagine the discomfort that it will bring you.
